Prosthetics and Orthotics
In September of 2018, we officially launched a prosthetic & orthotic program in Senegal to be delivered in partnership with on-the-ground experts from the German Leprosy and Tuberculosis organization called DAHW Senegal. Our long-term goal is to increase the quality of care and access to prosthetic and orthotic devices and rehabilitation in Senegal, West Africa.
This new partnership focuses upon P&O clinical training, technical training of products, materials logistics, workshop management and community awareness of physical rehabilitation care at Thies Hospital Rehabilitation Center. With cooperation of the Thies Government Hospital Orthopedic Department and from the Association of Persons with Disabilities, we hope that this project will serve as a model for replication for other needy regions of Senegal.
We are now in the second year of a three-year project. While hampered by Covid-19, we have already made major improvements in prosthetic and orthotic training, physical rehabilitation, equipment and facilities repair and material purchasing management.
DAHW and MOI staff working in close coordination with Thies workshop manager and physical therapy unit of the Orthopedic Rehabilitation Center have estimated the following production targets for Year 2:
- 130 Prosthetic and Orthotic devices
- 250 Prosthetic and Orthotic repairs
- 450 Therapy Sessions
- 830 Total service units
